Joanna Pantigoso Vacation Photographer based in Amsterdam

discover all what you can do within your photographic experience in the most beautiful gardens in The Netherlands

Welcome to The Netherlands! Let's photograph with tulips!
Booking 2026 is open

The Tulip Region (De Bollenstreek) is located in the province of South Holland, and travel time from Amsterdam is only around 40 minutes to 1 hour. The region is not well connected by trains, so we need to take buses, which makes the trip a bit longer and sometimes confusing. In this guide, you will have all the necessary information to make your trip as easy as possible, from transportation to the gardens you can visit with me or on your own, to the options for creating your photographic experience within the region.

When to book?

You will see dates from March 19th to May 10th, which are the opening dates for Keukenhof Gardens. Now, Keukenhof is a flower garden not exclusively for tulips, so in March, when the tulips are still on the ground, you will find narcissus, crocus, cherry blossom, and a few early tulips. To see the tulips in bloom, it is best to book from April 10th. For March 19th - April 5th, you also have the option of cherry blossom at Amsterdamse Bos.

If you don't find something, please feel free to send me a message, and I will help you make this dream of being surrounded by tulips a reality.

Private Tulip Field. April 2024.

What is the Tulip Region? and why is it important for The Netherlands?

The Tulip Region, also known as the "Bollenstreek," is a colorful slice of beauty in The Netherlands. It's famous for its stunning tulip fields that burst into a vibrant kaleidoscope of colors during Spring. These blooming fields are not just a visual treat but hold significant economic importance for the country. The tulip industry is a major player in Dutch agriculture and tourism. The export of tulip bulbs contributes significantly to The Netherlands' economy, making it a symbol of Dutch culture worldwide. So, beyond its picturesque charm, the Tulip Region is a vital part of the Netherlands' identity and economic landscape. But as beautiful as they are, we need to have in mind that stepping in those fields can endanger the final product, which are the bulbs.

This is the reason why some farmers started to open Gardens in the region. Gardens are areas that you can enter, walk between tulips, get closer, take pictures, and even pick up some tulips for an entry fee.

Keukenhof is the most well-known tulip garden, but there are others besides this one. Keukenhof is the most extensive garden in Europe, and you will need at least 3 hours to visit it.

Also, it is essential to know this is not the only area with tulips in The Netherlands, but it is the closest one and with the easiest access to public transport. This accessibility makes it a convenient and feasible destination for your visit. During the season that starts March 19th, 2026, we will be exploring other areas as well, ensuring you get the most comprehensive tulip experience.

Keukenhof, April 2024

Step 1: How to get there?

The easiest way from Amsterdam is to take a train to Schiphol Airport, then board the direct Arriva bus to Keukenhof. The ride takes around 40 minutes and runs frequently during tulip season. If you plan to visit Keukenhof, you can purchase a Combi Ticket on the Keukenhof website .www.keukenhof.nlThis ticket includes both your garden entrance and your return bus fare, making it the most reliable and time-saving option. Even if you want to explore the tulip fields without entering Keukenhof, booking this bus through the website is still the fastest way to arrive early in the day.

Another option is to take a train to Hillegom and cycle from there. If you already have a rental bike in Amsterdam, you can bring it on the train (bike ticket required). Bikes are not allowed inside Keukenhof, but you can cycle past the fields, reach your chosen tulip garden, and use the bike to explore the entire region. We provide a custom Google Maps route when you book an Explorer or Lifestyle Route session with us. If you prefer, you can also rent a bike directly at Hillegom station; the first tulip garden is only 7 minutes away by bike. This is my favorite way to visit the tulips, and it’s the method I’ll be using this year. I’d be delighted if you join me for a cycle to your chosen tulip garden.

Timing

For private tulip gardens, we can usually visit one garden per booked hour. Each has its own character, so taking time in each location allows for both photos and a relaxed experience.

Keukenhof is much larger and deserves more time. To explore it fully, plan for at least 2.5 hours inside the park. If you prefer to optimize your session, we can focus on capturing photos together in as little as an Essential session. This way, you will still have beautiful portraits, while leaving plenty of time to wander and enjoy the park at your own pace.

Keep in mind that the gardens are not located right next to each other. If you book an Explorer or Lifestyle Route, I will design and optimize the route so we can make the most of your day, balancing travel with photo time.

Entrance fees are not included in the session price and should be considered when planning your visit. If you would like, I can also assist with arranging tickets, booking taxis between locations, or reserving bikes for your day. These services are billed separately and will be added to your invoice.

Tulip Experience Amsterdam. April 2024

Step 2: Which options are possible in the Tulip Gardens?

To simplify the booking process, the same session options available in Amsterdam also apply to the Tulip Region, with an added travel fee. This fee covers my transportation, any entrances required, and the time needed to travel between gardens. The cycling time between gardens is not counted as part of your booked session, so you can enjoy the journey without feeling rushed.

We refer to tulip gardens, not tulip fields, as we only enter gardens that are open to the public with a paid entrance. This allows us to explore freely once tickets are purchased. If you are interested in visiting private tulip fields, please reach out before March. I work with farmers who allow limited access to their fields, with a maximum of two people per booking. Availability is limited, so it is best to arrange this early.

The Tulip Region is home to several gardens beyond Keukenhof. You can customize your experience depending on the time you have and the number of gardens you would like to visit.

Each option includes a travel fee that covers my transportation and entrances. Your own entrance tickets are not included, so please make sure to book your Keukenhof time slot and the bus from Schiphol in advance. A detailed guide with transport options will be provided in the Tulip Region Guide, and I am always happy to answer any additional questions.

Keukenhof Gardens, April 2023

Keukenhof Gardens

This garden is truly breathtaking, but it can get very crowded. For the best experience, I recommend scheduling your photoshoot at 8 AM or 5 PM when it's quieter. While we can photograph at other times, patience is key, which is why I suggest booking at least 60 minutes here.

This is the perfect choice if someone in your group has reduced mobility or if your time in the region is limited.

A travel fee is added to cover my entrance and transportation.

Keukenhof Gardens. April 2024

Tulip Gardens in the region

You’ll receive a Tulip Region Guide with names and addresses of all the open tulip gardens. During our session, you can choose which ones to visit, and I’ll recommend the closest options to make the most of your time. You’re also free to explore the rest on your own.

Want to visit multiple gardens? You can extend your session to fit more stops. This option is great if you’re renting a bike to cycle through the region or traveling by car.

Each garden requires a minimum stay of 45 minutes, and we can plan a custom route to explore as many as you'd like. A travel fee is added to cover my entrance and transportation.

The Tulip Barn, May 2021

Tulip Fields with entrance fee

Each year, a small number of tulip field owners open their fields to visitors with a paid entrance fee. Dates are usually announced in March or early April, depending on the crops, and time slots sell out quickly. If you are interested in a private field experience, please inquire before March so we can prepare in time.

Because field openings are never guaranteed on a specific day, all bookings are confirmed for the tulip gardens first. A private field can be added as an option, and if one is open on your booked date, we will arrange it.

Each private field visit allows a maximum of 40 minutes inside. You may also combine this experience with other gardens or with Keukenhof.

Since tulip fields operate on fixed time slots, please include your preferred date and indicate whether you would like a morning or afternoon session when inquiring. Once your photo session is confirmed, we will reserve your spot as soon as bookings open, or at the closest available time to your chosen session. Please note that private field bookings cannot be changed once confirmed. The entrance fee will be added to your invoice together with the transport fee a few days before the session.

Step 3: Which are the Photography Packages available?

The Travel Fee only includes my entry to the different gardens and my transport from Amsterdam to the Tulip Region. I will have a bike to transport me within the region. Be aware that you need to pay your entry fee to the gardens separately, but unless it is a weekend, don't purchase it before booking your photographer, as we can recommend the best way to reach the region. All pictures delivered are in JPG format and for Personal Use only.

The travel fee is invoiced separately during the week of your session and is due on the session date. Any additional services arranged, such as transport, tickets, or rentals, will also be added to this invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

They're mainly located in the surrounding areas, like Lisse, about a 40-minute drive from Amsterdam., which is an average of 1 hour using public transportation. The area is connected by bus from Schiphol Airport, with buses running every 30 minutes during the tulip season.

.

Yes. For sessions of 90 minutes or longer, we can include a few short clips filmed with the DJI Osmo Pocket. These will be delivered unedited so you can create your own final video.

We also offer a content creation add-on. This adds 30 minutes to your session, dedicated to capturing video content alongside your photos.

No. drone usage is restricted in the area and we will not use it.

No, even though the recommended bicycle rental is located in Keukenhof, the garden is pedestrian. So, if you have opted for the option, we will be cycling outside Keukenhof.

Technically this is possible, but I usually recommend against it. Keukenhof is a large garden that deserves enough time to enjoy and explore, so splitting the session may feel rushed.

If you prefer to divide your session, it can be arranged as long as you have your own transportation (car or bike). In that case, we would visit the garden closest to Keukenhof to make the most of your time. This option works best with the Urban Storybook session, while the Explorer package offers more flexibility for combining locations.

Yes. From 45 minutes onward, we can arrange a session in Keukenhof or any other tulip garden. Shorter sessions are a lovely way to capture quick memories in these special places. Please keep in mind that a transport fee applies for any location outside the Amsterdam ring.

Not at all. If we plan your proposal in one of the recommended tulip gardens or at Keukenhof, you only need to cover the standard entrance tickets. There is no extra charge for the proposal planning itself, every photo session includes that care and preparation.

The only time there is an additional cost is if you would like to rent a private tulip field for exclusive use, as farmers charge a fee for that. Please also note that the travel fee always applies for sessions outside Amsterdam.

The travel fee includes:

  • My transportation from Amsterdam to Keukenhof or your chosen tulip garden, and return
  • My entrance ticket to the garden
  • Cycling time between tulip farms if needed
  • Time and preparation for your photo session

The travel fee does not include:

  • Your own transfers
  • Your entrance tickets
  • Bicycle rental if required

Yes, you can do it up to 2 days in advance for any dates open during the same season. The scheduling system allows you 215 days ahead, but remember that Tulip season ends on the first week of May. If you prefer a date outside of the Tulip Season, the payments and booking will be towards an Amsterdam photo session with the same length and offerings.

Cancellations are possible up to 30 days in advance for a partial refund. We retain only €50 to cover the Amsterdam guide already sent, or the rental fee for a private tulip field if that was requested as an additional service. You will always receive an email with these details, and your reply will serve as formal confirmation and acceptance.

Refunds are processed through our payment merchant. Their timeline is 5–10 business days (Monday to Friday) from the date of request. We submit refund requests within two business days after receiving your confirmation email. Once the refund is requested, your original session date is reopened.

Rescheduling Policy

You may also choose to reschedule for the next tulip season. In this case, we honor the current year’s price and package inclusions, and you may set your new date anytime within the following two years. Payments must continue on the original schedule, as they act as a guarantee for your future session, transport fee included.

Please note that once you choose to reschedule, cancellations are no longer possible. You will also receive updated versions of the Amsterdam guide during this two-year period, or until your new session date takes place.

Yes, small modifications can be requested, like having a few images in Black & White, within 30 days of delivery. All sessions remain on my dashboard during that time. However, please keep in mind that my editing style is part of what makes the photos unique: vibrant colours and strong contrast are key to how I work. I kindly ask you to review my style before booking, as requests to fully change the editing style (for example, making it light and airy) won’t be accepted. For any new edits, I’ll just need a quick signed agreement before proceeding.

Yes. If you would like your photos to remain private, please let me know when booking. There is no extra fee for this, as privacy is always respected. I do encourage clients to allow me to share some images, as this helps me reach more wonderful people like you who are looking for these experiences. But the choice is entirely yours, and I am happy to honor your preference.

Sessions cannot be divided between multiple days. Each booking is planned as a continuous experience, with time built in for breaks and a natural flow between locations. Splitting across days would require a new booking, as every day involves preparation, travel, and editing work. If you feel you need extra time, additional hours can always be added to your session on the same day. This way the experience stays seamless and relaxed, without interruptions.
