Photographing Small, Intimate Events: A Welcome Brunch with Amsterdam International Women
Not all events are large or loud. Some of the most meaningful ones happen around a table.
This brunch was organized by Amsterdam International Women as a welcome moment for new members who have recently arrived in the city. It’s a recurring Sunday lunch, usually monthly, around noon, with a small group, often 15 to 20 women, meeting each other for the first time. Most people arrive not knowing anyone. That is exactly what makes these events important to document.
When people move to a new city, a community doesn’t appear automatically. It is built slowly, through conversations, shared meals, and moments where people feel seen and included. When I arrived in Amsterdam six years ago, Amsterdam International Women was one of the communities that helped me feel grounded. It gave me connections, familiarity, and a sense of belonging when everything else was new. That experience shapes how I photograph events like this.
Small lunches and intimate gatherings are fascinating to photograph because the focus isn’t on scale. It’s on people. You start noticing how someone relaxes once they feel welcome, the first shared laugh between strangers, or the shift from polite conversation to genuine connection. These moments happen quietly, and they pass quickly. Photography is how they are preserved.
For organizations, this kind of imagery matters. When a newcomer sees photographs that reflect warmth, ease, and real interaction, they immediately understand what an event feels like. That visual clarity builds trust and encourages participation far more than a description ever could. The goal is not to stage moments, but to notice them as they unfold. That’s where authenticity lives.
Short, intimate events like lunches, brunches, or small community gatherings are where photography becomes quiet and precise. They allow space for real reactions and honest connection. They also reflect a side of city life that is deeply local. These are the kinds of events that shape how people settle, connect, and stay.
For me, photographing them is both professional and personal. It’s a way of honoring the role community plays when you’re building a life in a new place, and of showing how powerful small gatherings can be.
Enjoy these pictures, and until next time in Amsterdam,
