Updated in 2026: I no longer offer photography sessions in Cusco or elsewhere in Peru. I am now based in Amsterdam, where I photograph couples, families, proposals, and solo travelers.

I met Cassie and Michael through Flytographer for their couple photo session in the beautiful city of Cusco. We started early in the morning, and it was cold. Very cold! They bravely removed their coats for some of the photographs, and their carefully coordinated outfits looked wonderful against the historic streets.

One of the most common questions I receive before a session is: What should we wear?

Here are five simple tips to help you choose.

1. Choose a color palette

Your clothes do not need to match, but the colors should work well together. You could select different shades of one color, combine neutral tones, or choose one accent color that appears subtly in both outfits. Place everything together on your bed before the session. This makes it easier to notice if one color or item feels disconnected from the rest.

2. Add layers

Layers make an outfit more interesting and are especially helpful in cold or unpredictable weather. A jacket, cardigan, scarf, or light coat can create another look without requiring a complete outfit change. Layers also help you remain comfortable between photographs.

3. Include a few accessories

Sunglasses, hats, jewelry, scarves, and small bags can add personality to your photographs. Accessories also give you something natural to interact with and make it easy to create different looks during the same session. Choose only a few so they complement you instead of becoming a distraction.

4. Wear comfortable shoes

We will usually walk between locations, so comfortable shoes are important. If you would like to wear heels or formal shoes in the photographs, bring a second pair for walking. You can change when we reach each location.

5. Ask your photographer

Send your photographer a photograph of your planned outfits before the session. A quick check can give you confidence or help you identify a small change that will make everything work better. I am always happy to review outfit combinations and suggest colors, layers, or accessories based on the location and expected weather.

I also recommend scheduling your photo session near the beginning of your trip. Besides receiving beautiful photographs, you can become familiar with the city and receive local ideas for the rest of your visit.
