A Multi-Generational Family Photo Session in Amsterdam
This family was visiting Amsterdam from Canada, and the session was a gift for the grandparents. They had never had professional photographs taken together with their children and grandchildren. The goal was simple: create beautiful photographs of the whole family in Amsterdam, while making the morning feel relaxed and enjoyable for two young children.
Starting early in a quiet Jordaan
We chose the Jordaan for the session and started early in the morning. At that time, the streets were quiet, which gave the children space to move and made it easy for the family to settle into the experience. The Jordaan was important to them. They wanted Amsterdam to be visible in their photographs, so we included wide views with canal houses, bridges, bicycles, and the city around them. The family is always the focus, but the setting becomes part of the memory too.
For a group with children, a quieter route makes a real difference. There is less traffic, fewer people walking through the background, and more space to pause, play, and photograph without making anyone feel rushed.
Photographing every important combination
With a multi-generational session, the whole-family photograph is only the beginning. We created the combinations they had hoped for: grandparents with the grandchildren, parents with the children, the adult family together, and individual portraits. The children were wonderful at following directions, which allowed us to create a wide collection without making the session feel too posed.
I guide these sessions carefully, but I also watch what is already happening naturally. The grandparents began connecting with the children straight away, and those small interactions became some of the loveliest photographs of the morning.
Keeping children involved
With children, the most important thing is keeping their attention without expecting them to behave like adults for an hour.
We kept moving, changed the combinations often, and made the session feel like a relaxed family walk. A photograph might begin with everyone together, then become a moment between grandparents and grandchildren, then a quick individual portrait, before we move on to the next canal or bridge. This rhythm helps children stay interested and gives the final gallery more variety. It also means the family has photographs that show both the big group and the smaller relationships within it.
An unexpected favourite: grandparents together
At the end of the session, we created a few portraits of the grandparents together. It had not been part of the original request, but the daughter who booked the experience loved those photographs. When a family gathers across generations, it is easy to focus only on the children. But it is also beautiful to make space for the people who made the family possible. Those quiet portraits became a small reminder that grandparents deserve to be in the photographs too, not only behind the camera or standing at the side.
Family photographs that hold a place and a time
A family photo session in Amsterdam can be both a memory of the city and a record of the people you shared it with. For this family, the photographs hold a trip from Canada, an early morning in the Jordaan, the laughter and energy of two children, and the rare chance to have three generations together in one frame.
The best family photographs are about making space for the people you love, exactly as they are, in a moment you will be grateful to remember.
