An Amsterdam family session in the middle of it all
One question families often have before a photo session in Amsterdam is whether the city will be too busy. Amsterdam is beautiful because people live in it. Bicycles pass through the streets, neighbors stop to talk, cafés fill up, boats move along the canals, and people are always on their way somewhere. The city does not pause when a family arrives for photographs. But it does not need to.
For this family session, we walked through a lively Amsterdam neighborhood with canal houses, bicycles, narrow streets, and the everyday movement that makes the city feel real. The family wanted relaxed, natural photos with Amsterdam visible around them.
A city celebration in the middle of the route
This session took place on Burendag, or Neighbors’ Day, when communities across the Netherlands come together to celebrate their neighborhoods. As we reached one of the streets on our route, a local celebration was already taking place. Later, we also came across what appeared to be a wedding gathering nearby. We hadn't planned on it, but the family loved being in the middle of it all.
Rather than trying to avoid every person, bicycle, or unexpected moment, I adjusted how we moved through the area. We used quieter corners when we needed more space, waited for the right moment when a street was busy, and kept the family connected rather than focused on what was happening around them. The result was a collection that still feels calm, even though Amsterdam was very much alive around us.
Helping a family feel comfortable in front of the camera
Most families do not arrive knowing exactly what to do in front of a camera. That is completely normal. My role is to guide the experience in a way that feels easy. I help with where to walk, where to stand, and small prompts that give people something natural to do together. I provide enough direction to create beautiful photographs, but never so much that the session feels stiff or overly posed.
This family later shared that they felt comfortable immediately and that the photographs were exactly what they had hoped for. That matters much more to me than creating a perfectly empty Amsterdam backdrop.
Family photographs that include the city
For visitors, Amsterdam is part of the story. A family session can capture both at once: your family's closeness and the feeling of the city you explored together. Sometimes Amsterdam is quiet, and sometimes it is celebrating right beside you. Either way, I will guide you through it and create the space for photographs that feel personal, relaxed, and true to your time here.
