A December Family Portrait Session in Amsterdam
December in Amsterdam has its own color palette. The yellow and green leaves have disappeared, the skies are often covered, and the canals become darker and softer. Brick reds, black facades, bare trees, and warm winter clothing begin to define the photographs instead. It is one of the things I notice most after years of photographing in different countries. In Lima, close to the equator, the light changes far less through the year. Here, each season creates a completely different feeling in a gallery. The same canal can feel bright and green in summer, golden in autumn, and quiet and muted in winter.
A photo session built around portraits
Some families want to walk through Amsterdam, interact naturally, and let the city become an active part of the experience. Others want to use their time for more intentional portraits: a strong full-family image, individual photos of each child, and photos of the parents together.
This family knew what they wanted. Their priority wasn't a long sequence of candid photos while exploring the city. They wanted portraits that clearly showed each person while still placing them in Amsterdam. We created a family portrait by the canal, photos of the parents together, individual images of each child, and a few quieter combinations in between. The focus stayed on the people in front of the camera.
Portraits can still feel personal
Even when a family asks for photographs looking at the camera, I still pay attention to the small details that make the images feel like them: where someone naturally stands, how they hold their hands, the space between family members, and the places that give the photograph depth without taking attention away from the people. The goal is to understand what they will value when they look back at their photographs years later.
For this session, that meant making sure every person had their own moment in front of the camera. The children had individual portraits, the parents had time together, and the final collection held the family as they were during their winter visit to Amsterdam.
Planning a family session around what matters to you
Before every photo session, I ask clients how they want their photographs to feel. We can shape the plan around your family, the season, your children's ages, and the memories you want to keep.
This family later shared that the session felt easy and natural, and that they had every photograph they needed. That is always my aim: a clear experience from the beginning, with a gallery that feels personal to you.
