Some Stories Stay Mostly Private | A Proposal in Amsterdam
One of the things I love most about photographing proposals is that no two are ever exactly alike. Some are carefully planned months in advance. Others are simple and quiet. Some happen in front of family and friends. Others happen with only two people present.
This proposal took place on a small bridge in Jordaan on a bright spring afternoon. After the question was asked and the answer was given, something unexpected happened. A person sitting at a nearby café had quietly witnessed the proposal from a distance. They waited respectfully, then walked over to congratulate the newly engaged couple. It was a small gesture, but one that felt very Amsterdam.
Moments like these happen throughout the city every day. Most pass unnoticed. Occasionally, I am fortunate enough to witness them through my camera. What makes this gallery special is that most of the photographs will remain private.
When clients book a proposal session, they decide exactly which images they would like to share publicly and which images they would prefer to keep for themselves. Those choices are always respected. The photographs shown here are only a small glimpse into a much larger story.
After the session, the groom shared:
"Joanna was so wonderful. This was one of the most special, magical moments of our life so far, and she really was the right person to capture it. She made us feel so comfortable, as this was both my first time taking professional photos, as well as my fiancée's. I couldn't recommend her enough."
Proposal photographs are important. But years later, what people usually remember first is not the photograph itself. They remember the excitement, the surprise, the happiness after hearing "yes," and the feeling of standing together at the beginning of a new chapter.
The photographs simply help them return to that moment.
See you soon in Amsterdam,
Joanna

Planning a Proposal in Amsterdam?
One of the advantages of proposing in Amsterdam is that the city naturally creates intimate moments. Every part of the city can become part of the story without requiring elaborate decorations or complicated planning.
When planning a proposal, I usually focus first on the experience itself. The location matters, but creating a moment that feels authentic to your relationship matters even more.
After the proposal, we can take a few relaxed portraits together, allowing you to enjoy the excitement of the moment while preserving it through photographs.
