A Surprise Proposal on Brouwersgracht and an Engagement Walk Through Jordaan
One of the things I enjoy most about proposal photography is that the proposal is rarely the entire story. The proposal itself may last only a few seconds, but what follows is often just as meaningful.
For this session, we started on Dommersbrug, overlooking Brouwersgracht in Amsterdam. After weeks of planning and secret communication, everything finally came together. The answer was yes. And then something changed.
The nerves disappeared, the excitement arrived, and what had been a carefully planned surprise became an afternoon spent celebrating together. Rather than ending the session after the proposal, we continued walking through some of the quieter streets of Jordaan, creating engagement photographs and giving them time to simply enjoy the moment.
Looking back through the gallery, some of my favourite photographs are not necessarily the proposal itself, but the smiles that happened afterwards. Those photographs feel less like documentation and more like the beginning of a new chapter.
They shared these words after receiving their full gallery:
"Joanna was the best possible outcome and surpassed our expectations. Not only did the shoot go super smoothly due to her immaculate planning, but the photos came out amazing, and the whole process of the surprise proposal was easily streamlined due to Joanna's guidance and her experience."
Love to share more about the beautiful stories captured in Amsterdam.
Are you coming soon? Can't wait to capture your story in this beautiful city.
See you soon in Amsterdam,
Joanna

Why Continue With Engagement Photos After The Proposal?
Many people assume proposal photography ends once the question has been asked. In reality, the moments immediately afterwards are often some of the most natural photographs of the entire day.
The excitement, laughter, and disbelief are still fresh, and couples are usually much more relaxed once the proposal is over. That is why I always recommend allowing time after the proposal itself. It transforms the experience from documenting a single moment into capturing the beginning of a shared story.
