Three Generations Among the Tulips | Family Photography at Keukenhof
Every family experiences travel differently.
Children often discover the world through curiosity. Parents balance logistics, schedules, and making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Grandparents bring a different perspective, appreciating moments that younger generations sometimes rush past.
During this family photography session at Keukenhof Gardens, three generations explored the tulip gardens together. While the adults admired the colourful displays, the youngest member of the family was simply excited to be surrounded by flowers, pathways, and new things to discover.
One of the things I enjoy most about photographing families is watching how each generation experiences the same place differently. Children are often interested in what is happening right now. Grandparents are more comfortable pausing, smiling for a portrait, and taking in the moment. Parents move naturally between both worlds.
Keukenhof is one of those rare places where all generations can enjoy the experience together. There is beauty everywhere you look, plenty of space to walk, and countless opportunities to slow down and appreciate being together.
The day itself was windy and busy, as spring days at Keukenhof often are. Yet those conditions rarely matter as much as people expect. What matters most is being present, enjoying the experience, and allowing the photographs to become part of the memory rather than the focus of it.
After the session, the family shared:
"Joanna was lovely to work with. She was very communicative and answered all of my questions ahead of the photoshoot, including providing tips on how to travel to Keukenhof Gardens from Amsterdam with two elderly people and a toddler. On the day of the shoot, it was windy and crowded. Joanna reassured me that we would still have beautiful photos, and she was right. She reminded us to be in the moment and enjoy the process, especially considering the beauty that was surrounding us. We made wonderful memories during this photoshoot that were captured so beautifully. Considering that Mother's Day in the US was coming up, the photos with my daughter and me, as well as with my own mom, are especially meaningful. Thank you, Joanna, for capturing a once-in-a-lifetime trip for our family."
Photographs become more valuable with time. For families travelling together across generations, they become a tangible memory not only of where they visited, but of who shared the experience with them.
Keukenhof lasts only a few weeks each year, but the memories created there can last much longer.
See you soon in Amsterdam,
Joanna

Planning a Family Visit to Keukenhof?
Keukenhof is one of my favourite locations for multi-generational family photography sessions because it offers something for everyone. Young children can explore the colourful gardens, parents can enjoy the experience without feeling rushed, and grandparents can comfortably walk through some of the most beautiful spring gardens in the Netherlands.
When planning a session, I encourage families to think beyond the photographs themselves. The best results often come when the visit feels like part of the holiday rather than a separate activity. Taking time to explore the gardens, admire the flower displays, and enjoy being together creates a more relaxed experience for everyone.
Every family is different, which is why I like learning about the people involved before recommending a route, even when it is inside the gardens. The ages of the children, mobility considerations, travel plans, and family dynamics all help shape the experience.
Keukenhof offers a unique opportunity to create memories surrounded by one of the most iconic spring landscapes in the Netherlands.
