A Private Canal Boat Photo Session in Amsterdam

A pre-wedding trip is already a meaningful way to celebrate, but experiencing Amsterdam from a private canal boat makes it even more memorable. The afternoon light reflecting on the water, the movement of the historic buildings, and the privacy of having the boat to yourselves create a relaxed and romantic atmosphere. Add a few drinks and snacks, and the journey becomes an experience rather than simply a photo session.

For this couple, we planned a two-hour route combining a private canal cruise with several moments on foot. This allowed us to create different types of photographs within a relatively short time.

On the boat, I documented the natural moments between them as they enjoyed the view, talked, and shared a drink. At selected locations, I offered gentle direction and used Amsterdam’s bridges, canals, and historic architecture to create more intentional portraits.

Why combine a boat tour with photographs on foot?

A private boat allows you to experience parts of Amsterdam from a completely different perspective. It also provides a quiet space away from the busiest streets.

Adding a few carefully selected stops gives the final gallery more variety. You can have relaxed documentary photographs aboard the boat, wider views from the water, and portraits together on Amsterdam’s bridges and canal streets.

Some of my favourite views from the water include: the Oosterdok, with the National Maritime Museum in the background; Torensluis and the colourful canal houses along the Singel; or the historic buildings and changing views near Muntplein.

The precise route depends on the boat, weather, canal traffic, available time, and the type of photographs we want to create.
