What if I tell you the busiest location in your photos can look empty?

Hi, I'm Joanna, a vacation photographer based in Amsterdam, and we talk about photography, Amsterdam, and The Netherlands for your next holidays.

We head south of Amsterdam to Keukenhof Gardens for a couple's photo session. Everyone says it's always busy, but let's prove it wrong. Today's photo session is a babymoon captured on April 3rd at around 10 a.m. Originally booked at 9:20 a.m., it got delayed due to light drizzle, which is very common in April.

Today, I want to share my 5 top tips for photographing in a busy location like Keukenhof:

1) Arrive early: Keukenhof opens at 8 a.m., and aim to start at this time. If you are not a morning person, the second best time is 5:30 p.m., when tour groups leave.

2) Dress warmly. I know it is Spring, but the Netherlands is still cold. So, flowing dresses are nice, but take a warm coat. Another option is to dress in layers.

3) Wear comfy shoes. Keukenhof is a large garden with a lot to walk from one side to the other. It would be better if the shoes were easily changed between locations or if you don't need to change them.

4) You don't need a tour bus to visit Keukenhof. The best way to reach it is to purchase the bus directly at the Keukenhof site. This will allow you to arrive right at the opening time and pay a discounted ticket for public transportation.
