A Walk Along the Canals, Just the Two of Them

This couple had already photographed a large family session in London, and came to Amsterdam wanting something simpler. This time, it was just the two of them. They didn’t arrive with a detailed plan or a long list of requests. They trusted me to guide the route, with one preference only: canals.

They were staying near the Pulitzer Hotel and had tickets for the Anne Frank House later that morning, so timing mattered. We planned the session to fit naturally into their day, starting close to their accommodation and moving through the Canal Belt at a relaxed pace.

What made this session work so well was the balance between structure and openness. I chose a route that showcased classic Amsterdam architecture, quiet canals, and streets that feel unmistakably local. As we walked, we talked about their travels, about the city, about what they enjoyed noticing. That rhythm allowed the session to feel easy rather than directed.

They asked for canals and interesting buildings. Amsterdam offers both in abundance, but knowing how to connect them into a walk that feels calm, coherent, and visually strong is where experience matters. We moved through some of the most beautiful canals in the city, using the buildings, bridges, and water as a backdrop without forcing anything.

The result is a set of images that feels natural and grounded. No stiff posing. No rushing. Just two people enjoying the city together, with space to be themselves.

This kind of session is ideal for couples who don’t want to plan every detail, who prefer to walk rather than stand still, and who enjoy learning about the city as they move through it. It also shows how a photo session can fit seamlessly into a travel day, even when you already have plans.

Sometimes, the most successful sessions come from letting go of control and allowing the city, and the walk, to lead the way.
