Family Photography in Amsterdam | Exploring the City Together

When families visit Amsterdam, they often spend days planning museums, canal cruises, restaurants, and places they want to see. What is harder to plan is how to remember the feeling of being together while exploring a new city.

This family joined me for a relaxed walk through Amsterdam's canals. Rather than treating the session as a traditional photoshoot, we approached it as part of their time in the city. We walked along quiet residential streets, crossed small canal bridges, and stopped whenever something caught the children's attention. There was no pressure to perform for the camera. The goal was simply to enjoy being together while I documented the experience.

One of the things I love about photographing families in Amsterdam is how naturally the city becomes part of the story. The canals, bicycles, narrow houses, and tree-lined streets provide a setting that feels unmistakably Dutch while still allowing families to remain the focus of the photographs. Travelling with young children often means embracing spontaneity. Children want to explore, run, point at boats, and notice details adults might miss. Instead of working against that energy, I build my sessions around it. The result is a collection of photographs that reflects the family's personality and the experience they shared together.

Planning a Family Trip to Amsterdam?

One of the most common questions parents ask is how long children can comfortably stay engaged during a photography session.

In my experience, the answer has less to do with the length of the session and more to do with the experience itself.

Children are naturally curious. When a session feels like an exploration of Amsterdam rather than a photoshoot, they often remain engaged much longer than most parents expect. I've photographed families for everything from 45-minute sessions to half-day experiences, and the biggest factor is whether children are having fun.

That is why I focus on creating experiences rather than asking children to pose for long periods of time. We might look for boats passing through the canals, discover hidden streets, watch bicycles go by, stop for a snack, or simply let children explore at their own pace. The photographs happen naturally along the way. For most families, an Essential Session provides plenty of time to create beautiful memories and a varied gallery of photographs. However, families who enjoy slower travel and want to explore more of the city often choose longer experiences.

Choosing the right location is equally important. Rather than selecting a famous landmark first, I prefer to learn about the family. The ages of the children, their interests, energy levels, and travel style help me recommend an area that will feel comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes the best location is not the most famous one, but the one where children can relax, explore, and simply be themselves. The result is a collection of photographs that feels less like a photoshoot and more like a memory of your time together in Amsterdam.
