Family Photography in Amsterdam | Choosing the Right Location

One of the most common questions I receive is where to take photographs in Amsterdam without large crowds. Most people expect the answer to be a specific canal, bridge, or hidden corner of the city. The reality is that choosing the right location is rarely about finding the most beautiful place. It is about understanding the people who will be photographed there.

Every family experiences Amsterdam differently. Some visitors dream about standing beside iconic canals. Others want quiet residential streets, flowers, cafés, historic architecture, or locations close to the places they plan to visit during the rest of the day. For this family session, one detail shaped the route from the beginning. Their daughter was bringing ballet pointe shoes and wanted to include them in part of the experience.

That small detail influenced many of the decisions we made. We chose quieter streets on the western side of Amsterdam's Canal Belt, looked for flatter surfaces that would be more comfortable for dancing, and planned a route that felt relaxed and easy to navigate together.

These details may seem small, but they often make the difference between a session that feels generic and one that feels personal. One of my favourite parts of planning photography sessions is learning about the people behind them. Understanding their interests, travel plans, and expectations helps me create an experience that feels connected to their trip rather than separate from it. The result is not simply a collection of photographs. It becomes a memory of how they explored Amsterdam together.

When choosing a location, I encourage families to think beyond famous landmarks. The best locations are often the ones that match your interests, energy levels, and travel style. A family travelling with young children may enjoy quieter streets and parks. Others may want iconic canal views, hidden courtyards, flower displays, or neighbourhoods close to their hotel.

Before each session, I like learning about the people I will be photographing. Small details can influence the entire experience. A favourite activity, a special interest, mobility considerations, or even a meaningful item brought from home can help shape the route.

Amsterdam offers beautiful locations throughout the city. The goal is not simply to find the most famous spot, but to find the places that feel right for you and your family.
