Why Jordaan Is One of My Favourite Areas for Family Photography in Amsterdam

One of the reasons I often recommend Jordaan for family photography is that it feels different from many other parts of Amsterdam. As you cross the Prinsengracht and leave the busiest areas behind, the atmosphere begins to change. The large canals and monumental houses of the Canal Belt give way to smaller streets, quiet canals, local cafés, bicycles, and a neighborhood that feels more lived in. For families, that difference matters. Children rarely enjoy standing still for long periods of time. They enjoy discovering, running, observing details, and interacting with the world around them. Jordaan naturally creates space for those moments to happen.

During this session, the family explored the neighborhood together on one of those bright but very cold Amsterdam mornings. The city was busy, but the smaller streets allowed us to slow down and enjoy the walk. Some of my favourite photographs from the session happened between locations rather than at any specific landmark. The children ran ahead, explored the streets, and simply enjoyed being together as a family. Those moments often become the photographs people treasure most years later. While the canals, bridges, and historic houses create a beautiful backdrop, the real story is always the people experiencing the city together.

After the session, the family shared:

"We loved our session with Joanna! She communicated clearly and was very kind to our kids. We love our photos and are very grateful she was able to capture such great moments from our trip!"

For me, the phrase "great moments from our trip" captures exactly what I hope to create during every family session in Amsterdam. The photographs become more than portraits. They become the memories of a family adventure shared together.

See you soon in Amsterdam,

Joanna

Planning a Family Photography Session in Amsterdam?

Jordaan is often one of my favourite neighborhoods for families because it offers a slower pace than many of Amsterdam's busiest areas.

The smaller streets, canals, and residential atmosphere create space for children to explore naturally while still providing beautiful views of the city. Rather than moving quickly between landmarks, families can enjoy the walk itself.

For many children, the most memorable parts of Amsterdam are not the famous attractions. They are the bridges, bicycles, boats, and little discoveries found along the way.

When planning a family photography session, choosing a neighborhood that matches your family's pace can make the entire experience feel more relaxed and enjoyable.
