3 Short Walking Routes Perfect for Photos in Amsterdam

Sometimes the best photos come from the moments in between, when you’re simply walking, looking around, and feeling the rhythm of the city. If you only have a little time or want a relaxed stroll with your camera, these three short routes are perfect. Each one takes about 20 minutes and shows a different face of Amsterdam.

1. Jordaan: quiet canals and local charm

Start at Noordermarkt and walk toward Prinsengracht through the small streets around Egelantierstraat. Turn left at Tweede Egelantiersdwarsstraat for the most beautiful view of the Westertoren in the background, and when you walk towards it, you will be inside a postcard, right in the middle of a beautiful bridge. This is one of the most photogenic corners in Amsterdam.

💡 Best light: early morning for empty streets

2. City Center: from Dam Square to hidden courtyards

Begin at Dam Square, walk down Begijnhof, and continue to Spui. In just a few blocks, you move from the city’s lively heart to one of its quietest, most peaceful courtyards. Capture contrasts: trams passing by, street performers, and then, the sudden calm inside the Begijnhof.

💡 Best light: morning, before crowds fill the square. On Fridays, there is an art street market right at Spui.

3. Around the Rijksmuseum: art and elegance

Start at Museumplein, then walk toward the Rijksmuseum gardens and cross Museumbrug toward Spiegelgracht. The walk gives you green spaces, reflections on the water, and a chance to photograph the museum’s grand façade from several angles. End your walk at Nieuwe Spiegelstraat with a visit to Kramer Kunst & Antiek, for one of the best places in the city for fantastic souvenirs, or stop by Stefs Bakery, which will surprise you with the best food I have tried on that street.

💡 Best light: golden hour or sunset.

Each of these short routes is easy to do between visits or after your photo session. They’re filled with beautiful backdrops and great spots to stop for coffee or a pastry. Amsterdam is best enjoyed slowly. Take your time, walk around, look up at the houses, and notice the little details that make each street unique.

Until next time, see you soon in Amsterdam.
