Why I Recommend Starting Photo Sessions at 8:00 AM in Amsterdam

If you’ve been looking into booking a photo session in Amsterdam, you may have noticed that I often recommend starting early, sometimes as early as 8:00 am, especially during spring and summer.

This is not only about light. It’s about creating the right experience, both for you and for the city around us.

A Calm City Before It Wakes Up

Amsterdam changes a lot throughout the day.

Early in the morning, the canals are quiet. Streets are still, and the city feels slower. This creates space for moments to unfold naturally, without interruptions.

From around 8:30 am onwards, the city begins to wake up:

  • morning commutes start
  • bicycles increase
  • deliveries begin
  • schools open and streets become more active

Starting earlier allows us to enjoy a calmer version of Amsterdam, where the experience feels more relaxed and intimate.

Why Light Matters, Especially in Summer

During spring and summer, the sun rises early and the light becomes stronger quickly.

Early sessions allow us to work with:

  • softer light
  • more even tones
  • fewer harsh shadows

This is particularly important for natural, candid photography.

That’s why in summer I sometimes recommend starting even earlier than 8:00 am.

Being Respectful of the City

While early sessions offer beautiful conditions, they also require awareness.

Amsterdam is a residential city. Many of the most beautiful canals are also people’s homes.

Before 8:00 am, we are especially mindful of:

  • keeping our voices low
  • avoiding loud direction or group energy
  • moving gently through the streets

For groups larger than four people, this becomes even more important. We avoid creating noise or drawing attention, and keep the experience calm and respectful.

How I Design the Routes

To balance all of this, I carefully design each route.

In early hours, we usually begin in more open or transitional areas, where movement and quiet conversation feel natural. As the city wakes up, we can move closer to residential canals and smaller streets.

This way:

  • we respect the people who live in the area
  • we keep the session comfortable and natural
  • we maintain the quality of the experience

A Better Experience for You

Starting early is not just about photography. It’s about how the session feels. You’re not navigating crowds or rushing between bicycles.

Instead, you’re walking through a quieter Amsterdam, where the focus stays on your experience.

Planning Your Session

If you’re visiting during spring or summer, I will usually recommend an early start time based on:

  • the season
  • the type of session
  • the locations we plan to visit

And I will always guide you through what to expect, so the experience feels simple and well prepared.

See you soon in Amsterdam.
