My Favorite Museums in Amsterdam After Seven Years Living Here

People often ask me which museums I recommend in Amsterdam.

The answer depends on what you're interested in, but after seven years living in the city and visiting museums regularly, I have developed a list of favorites that I return to again and again.

You may notice that some famous museums are missing.

The Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum are both excellent and absolutely worth visiting if their subjects interest you. However, this list is not about the most famous museums in Amsterdam. It is about the museums that helped me understand the city better and that I find myself recommending most often.

If you only visit one museum, visit the Rijksmuseum. If you visit several, these are the ones I would choose.

1. Rijksmuseum

If you only visit one museum in Amsterdam, make it the Rijksmuseum.

Most visitors come for Rembrandt and Vermeer, and they should. But the reason I keep returning is different. The Rijksmuseum has become my place to learn.

I visit for temporary exhibitions, photography exhibitions, the museum gardens, and sometimes simply because I want to spend an hour looking at one specific room. It is one of the few museums where every visit feels different.

No other museum has helped me understand Dutch history, art, and culture more than this one.

2. Museum of the Canals

Before living in Amsterdam, I admired the canals. After visiting this museum, I understood them.

The Museum of the Canals explains why Amsterdam looks the way it does and how the city expanded over time. It is one of the best introductions to Amsterdam and one of the museums I recommend most often to first-time visitors.

After your visit, the Canal Belt stops being a beautiful backdrop and becomes a story you can read while walking through the city.

3. Our Lord in the Attic

Hidden inside an ordinary canal house is one of the most remarkable museums in Amsterdam.

The Our Lord in the Attic Museum tells the story of religious tolerance in the Dutch Republic through a secret church hidden in the attic of a private home.

What I enjoy most is the gradual journey through the house. You move from room to room, climbing higher and higher until you finally reach the church itself.

The contrast between the modest living spaces and the impressive church makes the experience unforgettable.

4. Rembrandt House Museum

Many museums display paintings. The Rembrandt House helps you understand the artist.

Walking through the rooms where Rembrandt lived and worked makes his story feel much more personal. The demonstrations of painting and printmaking techniques are particularly interesting because they show how much work and craftsmanship went into every artwork.

If you enjoy history, art, and learning how things were made, this museum is a wonderful complement to the Rijksmuseum.

5. Museum Van Loon

If you have ever wondered what life was like inside one of Amsterdam's grand canal houses, this is the museum to visit.

The rooms remain beautifully preserved, giving visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of one of Amsterdam's wealthy merchant families.

I particularly enjoy the garden, which feels like a hidden world behind the busy canal outside.

Museum Van Loon is one of those places that helps you imagine the people who once lived behind the elegant facades of the Canal Belt.

6. Maritime Museum

Amsterdam would not exist in its current form without the sea. The Maritime Museum explains how trade, navigation, and shipbuilding shaped both the city and the country.

The replica ship outside is often the first thing visitors notice, but I think the strength of the museum is how it connects local history with global history.

It is also one of the most family-friendly museums in Amsterdam and a great choice if you are visiting with children.

7. Museum Het Schip

This is the museum I recommend to anyone interested in architecture. Museum Het Schip focuses on the Amsterdam School movement and completely changed the way I look at buildings in the city.

After visiting, details that once seemed ordinary suddenly become impossible to ignore. Brickwork, decorative elements, doorways, windows, and street corners start revealing stories you never noticed before.

It may not be the most famous museum in Amsterdam, but it is one of the most rewarding.

8. Resistance Museum

If you are interested in the Second World War, the Resistance Museum is one of the most thoughtful museums in the city.

What makes it special is that it focuses on the choices ordinary people faced during the occupation. History is rarely presented as simple, and this museum does an excellent job of showing the difficult decisions people had to make.

The exhibitions are interactive, accessible, and deeply human. For visitors who cannot find tickets to the Anne Frank House, I often recommend this museum as an alternative.

How I Would Prioritize Them

If you only have time for one museum, choose the Rijksmuseum.

If you want to understand Amsterdam itself, visit the Museum of the Canals.

If canal houses fascinate you, combine Museum Van Loon with Our Lord in the Attic.

If you love architecture, make time for Museum Het Schip.

If you are traveling with children, the Maritime Museum is an excellent choice.

And if you are interested in the Second World War, I would start with the Resistance Museum.

Amsterdam has more than sixty museums, and there is no right way to explore them all. These are simply the museums that helped me understand the city, its history, and the people who shaped it.

And after seven years, they are still the ones I return to most often.

Until next time in Amsterdam,
