If you’re planning a visit to Amsterdam in June or July, you’ve probably asked yourself this question:
Will it be too crowded for photos?

The short answer is: yes, Amsterdam is busy in summer. But that doesn’t mean your experience has to feel crowded.
Summer is one of the most popular times to visit Amsterdam. The city is full of life:
- terraces are open
- canals are active
- streets are busy with visitors and locals

From around 9:00 am onwards, the city starts to fill up quickly. By late morning and midday, the main areas can feel crowded, especially around:
- the Canal Belt
- Jordaan main streets
- popular bridges and landmarks
This is completely normal. It’s part of the energy of the city.

The Good News: Crowds Can Be Managed. Crowds don’t mean your photos will be full of people. With the right approach, we can still create images that feel calm, personal, and focused on you.

There are three key things that make the difference:
1. Timing Is Everything
The most effective way to avoid crowds is simple:
Start early.
In summer, I usually recommend starting sessions around 8:00 am (or earlier when possible).

At that time:
- the city is quieter
- the light is softer
- movement is slower
By the time the city becomes busy, we’ve already captured the most important moments.

2. Route Design Matters More Than Location
It’s not only about where you go, but how you move through the city.
Instead of staying in one popular spot, I design routes that:
- move through quieter canals
- avoid peak pedestrian flow
- use angles and distance to create space
Some of the most beautiful photos are taken just a few streets away from the busiest areas.

3. Focusing on the Moment
One of the most important things I tell my clients:
Focus on each other, not on what’s around you.
Even when people are nearby, your experience remains yours.
And from a photography perspective:
- I use positioning and timing
- I adjust angles and depth
- and when needed, I refine the background
So the final images feel calm and intentional.

What About Midday Sessions?
Midday sessions are possible, but they come with a different atmosphere.
- more people
- stronger light
- more movement

For some clients, this energy works well. But if you’re looking for a quiet and intimate experience, early morning is always the best choice.
A Realistic Perspective
Amsterdam in summer is not empty. But it is absolutely possible to create:
- relaxed moments
- meaningful photos
- a calm experience
The key is not avoiding the city, but understanding how it moves throughout the day.
