If you are planning a trip to Amsterdam this year, there is a unique opportunity to see the city from a completely new perspective. Het Dak van de Stad (The Roof of the City) is a temporary platform built on top of the Nieuwe Kerk, right next to Dam Square, and it offers one of the best views over the historic center.
A Temporary Viewpoint in the Heart of Amsterdam
The Nieuwe Kerk has always been one of Amsterdam’s most iconic buildings, and now its rooftop has been transformed into a platform where visitors can enjoy the city from above. From here, you can look across Dam Square, see the Royal Palace from a new angle, and admire the rooftops of the Canal Belt stretching into the distance.

When to Visit
The rooftop is open daily from March 22 until November 2, 2025, from 11:00 to 18:00. It is one of the best things to add to your itinerary if you are already planning to visit the city center.
Tickets and Prices
- Free with a Museumcard
- €15 for a rooftop-only ticket (adult price)
- €30 for a combined ticket that includes the World Press Photo exhibition, on view inside the Nieuwe Kerk until September 21, 2025

Why You Should Go
Amsterdam does not have many tall buildings in the historic center, which makes this viewpoint truly special. You get to enjoy a panorama that is usually only available from towers like the Westerkerk or the Zuiderkerk. The difference here is that the rooftop is much more spacious, and you see Dam Square from directly above.
It is also one of those activities that combines culture and leisure. You can visit an exhibition inside the Nieuwe Kerk and then step out into the open air to enjoy the city from above.

Photo Opportunities
If you are a photographer, this is a must. The platform is perfect for wide-angle shots of the city, portraits with Dam Square in the background, and unique perspectives of the Royal Palace. Since the light changes throughout the day, it is worth considering visiting either in the morning for softer light or late afternoon for warm tones.

A Local Tip
Combine your visit with a walk through Dam Square and the surrounding streets. From here, you can easily walk to the Canal Belt, the Jordaan, or the Red Light District. It is right in the center, so you are perfectly placed to continue exploring after your visit.

Final Thoughts
Het Dak van de Stad is one of the highlights of Amsterdam this year. Seeing the city from above gives you a completely new perspective. If you are here before November, make sure to add this to your list.
Until the next adventure in Amsterdam.
