There is something special about photographing a couple who trusts the planning process and is open to recommendations. Chelsee and Josh travelled from the United States to Amsterdam and agreed to meet early in the morning, when the streets were quieter and the light was soft.

We walked through the Jordaan and the surrounding canal streets, creating a relaxed collection of photographs along the way.

This part of Amsterdam brings together many of the details visitors imagine when planning their trip: historic canal houses, bridges, flowers, distinctive façades and views of the Westertoren, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

Starting early gave us more freedom to move through the streets without large crowds. It also allowed Chelsee and Josh to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or constantly waiting for people to leave the background.

Why sharing your vision matters

Before your photo session, tell your photographer what attracts you to their work and how you would like your photographs to feel. You do not need to arrive with a complete list of poses or exact locations. A few references, priorities or words describing the atmosphere you love can be enough.

It is equally important to choose a photographer whose portfolio already reflects the style you want. When you connect with their work and trust their knowledge of the location, they can guide you towards the right route, timing and light while still creating photographs that feel personal to you.

For this session, Chelsee and Josh brought their connection and willingness to enjoy the morning. I brought the route, knowledge of the light and gentle direction. Together, we created photographs that capture both their relationship and the Amsterdam they had imagined.
