How I Match Each Proposal to the Right Canal Boat in Amsterdam

One of the most common assumptions I hear from clients is that I use the same boat for every proposal. The reality is quite different.

When someone contacts me to plan a proposal in Amsterdam, the first thing I do is learn about the experience they want to create. Some couples dream of a quiet and private moment on the canals. Others want beautiful views of Amsterdam's historic houses. Some prefer a classic boat with character, while others prioritize having space to celebrate together after the proposal.

The boat is important, but it is only one piece of the experience.

Before recommending any boat, I ask my clients to complete a questionnaire. Their answers help me understand what matters most to them, how they imagine the proposal unfolding, and what kind of atmosphere feels right for them. Once I understand the vision, I begin looking for the boat that best matches it.

Amsterdam offers many beautiful boats, but not all of them work well for proposals. Some boats are excellent for privacy. Others offer beautiful views from the outside. Some work well when I photograph discreetly from the street or a bridge. Others allow me to be on board while still giving the couple enough space to enjoy the moment without feeling observed.

The goal is never to find a boat. The goal is to find the right boat.

The couple featured in these photographs joined me on a spring afternoon when rain was expected throughout the day. Because Amsterdam weather can change quickly, I selected a boat that offered flexibility. At the beginning of the cruise, the rear section remained partially covered to protect against the drizzle. As the weather improved, the space opened up, and we were able to enjoy the canals comfortably while continuing the photo session.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy working with experienced local skippers and carefully selected boats. The right choice allows the experience to adapt to the weather instead of being controlled by it.

Another detail many visitors don't realise is how different boats feel once you are on board. Some place the skipper directly next to the couple for the entire cruise. Others offer separate spaces that create a much more intimate atmosphere. Depending on the proposal plan, that difference can completely change the experience. For me, planning a proposal is about much more than choosing a beautiful location. It is about bringing together the right route, the right timing, the right photography approach, and the right boat so that everything feels natural on the day itself.

By the time the proposal takes place, the planning is already done. The couple can simply enjoy the experience, celebrate together, and focus on the moment they will remember for years to come.

If you are thinking about proposing in Amsterdam and would like help creating a proposal that feels personal to your relationship, I would be happy to help design an experience that fits you.

See you soon in Amsterdam,

Joanna
