A Surprise Proposal at Keukenhof Gardens
One of the reasons I enjoy photographing proposals at Keukenhof is that it allows me to hide in plain sight. Unlike a proposal in a quiet park or on a bridge in Amsterdam, Keukenhof is filled with visitors carrying cameras and taking photographs everywhere they go. That means I can walk through the gardens with a professional camera in my hands without attracting attention. To everyone else, I simply look like another visitor enjoying the flowers.
For this proposal, tulips were one of the main reasons for visiting the Netherlands, so proposing surrounded by spring flowers felt like the perfect choice. Before the session, we carefully planned the exact location. I marked where the proposal would happen and where I expected to stand. However, when I arrived that morning, I noticed the light was falling differently than expected. The sun was already beginning to filter through the trees, creating a beautiful glow across the flower beds. At the last minute, I adjusted my position and waited for the moment.
As he approached the proposal location, he made eye contact with me to confirm he was standing exactly where he needed to be. A few seconds later, he was on one knee.
One of my favorite parts of this proposal was how genuinely surprised she was. Throughout the rest of the session, she mentioned several times that she had not expected it at all. Those reactions are often the moments couples remember most clearly years later. After the proposal, we continued exploring some of my favorite areas of Keukenhof together. One of the advantages of proposing early in the morning is that the gardens are still relatively quiet, allowing couples to enjoy the experience before the busiest hours begin. We walked through colorful flower displays, photographed among the tulips that had inspired the trip, and finished near the windmill, one of Keukenhof's most recognizable landmarks.
This proposal took place during the final days of tulip season, when many visitors assume the gardens are already past their best. In reality, Keukenhof still offered beautiful displays and some of the most vibrant colors of the spring
Every proposal is different, but this one captured something I love about spring in the Netherlands: beautiful flowers, thoughtful planning, and the excitement of a surprise that becomes part of a couple's story forever.
Are you coming to Amsterdam? I would love to help capture your story.

Why Keukenhof Works So Well for Surprise Proposals
Many visitors think of Keukenhof simply as a place to admire tulips, but it is also one of my favorite locations for surprise proposals. The gardens offer a variety of beautiful settings, from quiet corners surrounded by flowers to larger displays filled with color. Because so many visitors are taking photographs throughout the day, it is easy for me to blend into the surroundings and photograph the proposal without attracting attention.
Early mornings are especially enjoyable. The gardens are calmer, the paths are easier to explore, and couples can enjoy the experience before the busiest hours arrive. After the proposal, there is no need to rush away. Instead, we can continue walking through the gardens together, creating engagement photographs while enjoying one of the most beautiful moments of the Dutch spring.
Tulip season only lasts a few weeks each year, which makes the experience feel even more special. For couples visiting the Netherlands in spring, a proposal at Keukenhof combines one of the country's most iconic landscapes with a meaningful personal memory that will stay with them long after the flowers have disappeared.
