A Secret Among the Tulips

The photo session had been booked as a couple's session, but somewhere behind the scenes, another plan was quietly unfolding. He wanted to propose during the session, yet every message he sent arrived through the booking platform, where any reply from me could have revealed everything. I could read his excitement, but I couldn't answer without risking the surprise. Eventually, we found another way to communicate.

Just a little tip: if you're planning a surprise during an already booked photo session, Instagram is the best way to share your plans. :).

From that moment on, the photo session became something more. It became a story we were creating together.

The Tulperij was the perfect setting. During tulip season, visitors are welcomed into a supervised section of the fields, where they can experience the flowers without disturbing the growers' work. We began the session near the entrance, taking relaxed portraits while talking about their travels and enjoying one of those Dutch spring afternoons when everything seems to cooperate: soft light, calm weather, and endless rows of colour stretching towards the horizon. Little by little, we walked deeper into the fields.

At the back, away from the rest of the visitors, the world suddenly became very quiet. That was the moment.

She had booked a photo session expecting beautiful photographs among the tulips. Instead, she found herself saying yes.

This was one of those engagement proposals that simply belonged to the people living it. Tears appeared before words did. There was no rush, no audience, no performance. Just two people, surrounded by tulips, beginning the next chapter of their lives.

After taking a few moments to let everything sink in, we continued photographing, this time with a different energy. Every smile carried the excitement of what had just happened.

Later that afternoon, we continued to Tulip Experience Amsterdam, another of my favourite places in the Dutch flower region. The formal proposal was behind us, replaced by laughter, quiet conversations, and the simple joy of wandering through gardens in full bloom.

At one point, standing among the flowers, I joked that they looked as though they had stepped straight out of Outlander. There was something timeless about them. Their elegant outfits, the endless gardens, and the gentle way they looked at one another made it easy to imagine they belonged to another century, strolling through an estate that had always been theirs.
