Booking Your Own Boat in Amsterdam: A Summer Afternoon on the Canals
Booking a boat in Amsterdam is surprisingly easy. If your group is small, under six people, and the weather is good, a self-drive boat is one of the best things you can do in the city. You do not need a boating license. You simply direct the boat.
That said, I want to be honest.
Directing a boat is simple, but it does take confidence. I had never driven a boat before, and while it was doable, I personally felt more relaxed once I understood how the boat responds. If you have a driver’s license, or some experience steering vehicles, it helps a lot. Once you get comfortable, it becomes part of the fun.
What I loved most about this experience was the freedom.
* You choose where to go.
* You stop when you want.
* You bring your own snacks.
* You sit, talk, photograph, or do nothing at all.
Compared to guided tours, riding your own boat feels slower and more personal. You see Amsterdam from the water, but on your own terms. It is also perfect for taking photos. The light, the reflections, the movement of the city, all of it changes when you are on a boat.
After the Leiden experience, I decided to propose to a group of photographers based in Amsterdam a self-drive boat experience. The idea is simple: small groups, shared steering, time to photograph, and time to just enjoy being on the canals.
If you are unsure about driving, ask the rental company questions in advance. They are usually very clear and helpful, there are simple rules, and only remember is that the bigger the boat the preference to pass.
We wented the boat with Mokumboat.
And sometimes, that is all you need.
Until the next time in Amsterdam,
Joanna
