Family Photo Session in Amsterdam With Young Children

When families travel with young children, photo sessions need to be flexible. This family came to Amsterdam with two children, aged six and three, and their main wish was simple: a few beautiful family photos with canals, historic buildings, and green spaces in the background.

They were very aware that their kids would not want to stand still for long, especially with an early morning start. That awareness actually helped shape the session in a positive way. Instead of forcing constant movement or long walks, we planned the route carefully and adjusted the meeting point to reduce walking distance. Small decisions like this make a big difference when photographing families with little legs and limited patience.

The session focused mostly on images of the four of them together. While there were more posed moments than I usually do, the posing was kept light and quick, always adapted to the children’s mood and energy. Between poses, we allowed space for short pauses, small conversations, and moments where the kids could simply be themselves. This balance is key when working with young children, especially early in the day.

What stood out during this shoot was how calm the experience felt, even with tired kids. That doesn’t happen by accident. When children feel rushed or overstimulated, it shows immediately in photos. By choosing nearby locations, working efficiently with light, and keeping expectations realistic, the session stayed relaxed from start to finish.

The result was a set of family images that feel natural, connected, and true to this stage of their lives. Photos that don’t aim for perfection, but for presence.
