A Holiday Photo Walk in Amsterdam, Celebrating a 15th Birthday

Some photo sessions come together very naturally. This one did from the very first message.

A mother and daughter were visiting Amsterdam during the holiday season to celebrate a special milestone: her daughter’s 15th birthday on January 1st. They wanted photos that felt relaxed and joyful, with a mix of candid moments and a few still portraits, and they were open to trusting my recommendations for timing and location.

Because their travel schedule was flexible, we adjusted the session date to allow them to enjoy the rest of their week without rushing. This kind of flexibility often makes a big difference. When the schedule feels calm, the session does too.

We chose a route that allowed us to walk at an easy pace, pause when something caught our attention, and let the city become part of the experience. Amsterdam during the holidays has a quieter rhythm, and that worked beautifully for this session. We focused on connection rather than poses, moving through bridges, streets, and open spaces where moments could unfold naturally.

What made this session special was how comfortable they were together. There was laughter, conversation, and an ease that doesn’t need much direction. I offered guidance when needed, but mostly I followed their energy, allowing space for candid moments as well as a few more composed photographs they could treasure as keepsakes from this trip.

When there is trust, openness, and time to simply be present, the images reflect that. This was a celebration not only of a birthday, but of time spent together, marking a moment in their story in a way that feels personal and honest.
