Every Trip Deserves a Place in Your Family Album

"When I look at my photobooks from year to year, I can see how quickly the kids are growing up."

This client wrote that sentence in their questionnaire, and from that moment I knew we weren't just going to create photographs. We were going to create memories and design a route that matched their curiosity and the way they love to travel.

Why Family Vacation Photos Matter More Than Beautiful Pictures

When families contact me, they usually don't know the city. They know they have limited time, and they ask me for suggestions on the best route for their session. That's why I ask so many questions before we meet. Every answer helps me choose the best meeting point, the right route, and the experience that will suit them best.

Families often tell me they don't need hundreds of photographs. They simply don't want to forget what this stage of life felt like. Children grow so quickly that every trip becomes part of a timeline you can never revisit.

My approach to photography always starts with three questions: What is your goal? Where will these photographs live? How do you want to remember your visit to Amsterdam? Once I understand those answers, everything else falls into place.

Instead of pick a random starting place, I design each session around your trip. Before we met, I already knew this family loved travelling, discovering different cultures, and creating photo books from every adventure. I also knew they wanted their children to remember Amsterdam as more than a collection of famous landmarks. The result becomes a much more personal experience.

As we walked, we talked about the city, its history, and whatever came to mind. At one point, we found ourselves on Bergstraat, and somehow the conversation turned into a game of word associations that eventually ended with the word "iceberg." The children were fascinated, and I have a feeling that's one of those little moments they'll remember every time they look back at these photographs or share them with friends. To me, that's the difference between photographing Amsterdam and photographing your experience of Amsterdam.

The city is a backdrop that I know extremely well, but the story is always yours.

A few days after returning home, they sent me a message that perfectly captured why I love doing this work.

"Looking through the gallery after our vacation was such a joy. We were quite tired during the photo session... I wasn't sure how the photographs would turn out. But I was delighted when I looked through the gallery properly. Joanna captured wonderful moments where we all looked like we were having such a good time together. I love the richness of the colours, the whole vibe of them... Thank you for nudging us to get the best out of everyone. Your work is truly amazing, and we feel so privileged to have been photographed by someone as talented as yourself."

As photographers, we spend a lot of time talking about cameras, lenses, editing, and locations. Families, however, talk about opening an album five or ten years later. They remember how small their children were, what made them laugh, the conversations they had while walking through a new city, and how that trip became part of their family's history.

That's why I encourage every family to print their photographs. Digital galleries are wonderful, but photographs become part of your family's legacy when they're held in your hands, shared around the table, and passed from one generation to the next.

For me, that's what vacation photography has always been about.

Creating memories that become part of your family's story.

Until next time in Amsterdam,

Joanna

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a family photo session in Amsterdam?
Most family sessions last between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the collection you choose. This gives us enough time to explore, let children settle into the experience, and capture both candid moments and family portraits.

How do you choose the route for our session?
Every route is planned after reading your questionnaire. I consider your goals, your children's ages, your interests, and the story you want your photographs to tell. I also take your accommodation into account, as getting around Amsterdam's historic centre with children isn't always straightforward by public transport. Whenever possible, I choose a meeting point and route that minimise walking while still showcasing the city's most beautiful locations.

What if my children don't enjoy being photographed?
That's completely normal. I don't expect children to pose for long periods. Instead, we keep moving, explore together, and create little interactions that naturally lead to genuine smiles and expressions.

Should we print our photographs?
Absolutely. Digital galleries are wonderful for sharing, but printed photographs become part of your family's story. Albums and prints are often the way children rediscover these memories years later.

I offer professionally designed albums and museum-quality prints, with delivery available throughout Europe, the United States, Mexico, and Peru. If you prefer to print locally, I can also design your album and provide it as a digital file, ready for printing wherever you choose.
