Amsterdam is a city best explored slowly.
The canals invite you to wander without a plan, the cafés encourage long conversations, and even a simple walk can turn into an unexpected discovery. If you are visiting with your partner, you'll quickly understand why so many people fall in love with this city.
You don't need a packed itinerary to enjoy Amsterdam as a couple. Some of the most memorable moments happen while sharing a slice of apple pie by a canal, watching the boats go by, or getting lost in a neighborhood you hadn't planned to visit.

That said, a few experiences stand out. After seven years of living in Amsterdam, these are some of my favourite things to do as a couple. They work just as well for visitors discovering the city for the first time as they do for locals looking to slow down and enjoy it differently.
Take a Canal Cruise Together
Amsterdam looks completely different from the water. While walking allows you to appreciate the details of the canal houses, a boat gives you a better understanding of how the city was designed. I particularly enjoy smaller boats where you can sit quietly, enjoy a glass of wine, and watch daily life unfold along the canals. If you are celebrating a special occasion, a private boat can make the experience even more memorable.

Explore the Canal Belt on Foot
If I could recommend only one activity to a couple visiting Amsterdam, it would be to spend a few hours walking through the Canal Belt. This is the Amsterdam many people imagine before arriving: elegant canal houses, historic bridges, flowers hanging from railings, and boats passing quietly below. The beauty of the area is that there is no need for a strict plan. Simply choose a direction and allow yourselves to wander.

Visit a Museum Together
Amsterdam has more than sixty museums, covering everything from Dutch Masters and photography to contemporary art, science, and history. Some museums are interactive, while others invite you to slow down and reflect. Visiting a museum together often creates some of the most interesting conversations during a trip, especially when you discover something neither of you expected to find.
You can see a list of my favourite museums in Amsterdam, and the list might surprise you.

Have Dinner in a Historic Canal House
Many of Amsterdam's restaurants are located inside former canal houses, some of them hundreds of years old. Beyond the food itself, I always enjoy the atmosphere these buildings create. Large windows overlooking the canals, old wooden beams, and historic interiors make dinner feel like part of the experience rather than simply the end of the day.
My favourites are:
- De Belhamel: located where Brouwersgracht meets Herengracht, this is one of my favorite canal-side restaurants in Amsterdam. The views are beautiful, the atmosphere is romantic, and the location is perfect after a walk through Jordaan.
- Jansz: located inside the Pulitzer Hotel and surrounded by interconnected canal houses, Jansz combines great food with one of the most beautiful settings in the Canal Belt. The neighborhood itself is part of the experience.
- Hemelse Modder: hidden along one of Amsterdam's quieter canals, this is the kind of restaurant I would choose after a long day exploring the city. The setting feels local, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the canal outside reminds you that some of Amsterdam's best experiences happen away from the main tourist routes.
- De Luwte: If someone asked me for a restaurant that feels hidden away from Amsterdam's crowds, De Luwte would be high on my list. The historic building and relaxed atmosphere make it feel like a small escape in the middle of the city. Love their cocktails.
- Brasserie Ambassade: Set inside several historic canal houses along the Herengracht, Brasserie Ambassade offers the classic canal-house experience. Large windows overlooking the water and elegant interiors make it a wonderful choice for a special evening together.
Explore Jordaan in Search of Your Favorite Bakery
Jordaan is one of my favorite neighborhoods for a slow morning or afternoon. The area is filled with small streets, independent shops, cafés, and bakeries. Instead of creating a list of places to visit, I recommend turning it into a small adventure. Walk through the neighborhood, stop whenever something looks interesting, and see which bakery becomes your favorite by the end of the day.

Book a Couple's Photo Session
A photo session can be much more than standing in front of a camera. Some of my favorite sessions feel like a relaxed walk through the city, with photography happening naturally along the way. For couples looking for something special, the experience can also be combined with a canal cruise, allowing you to create memories while exploring Amsterdam from a different perspective.

Cycle Together in Amsterdamse Bos
Many visitors imagine cycling through central Amsterdam, but I often recommend Amsterdamse Bos instead. The park offers wide cycling paths, open green spaces, forests, lakes, and far fewer distractions than the city center. It is a wonderful place to spend a few hours together and experience a quieter side of Amsterdam that many tourists never see.
Rent a bicycle at De Boshalte near the entrance of the park and make your way towards the Grote Vijver, close to the Amsterdamse Bostheater. It is one of my favorite spots for a picnic and a great excuse to slow down for an afternoon.
If picnics are not your thing, Amsterdamse Bos also offers other activities. Last May, I booked a BBQ Boat for my partner and me, and we spent a few hours navigating the waterways while preparing lunch on board. It was a fun and relaxed way to experience the park from a different perspective. Here is a video of our experience.
The best experiences in Amsterdam are rarely the ones you rush through. The city rewards those who slow down and pay attention. I hope these ideas help you create meaningful memories together and discover your own favorite corners of Amsterdam.
Until next time in Amsterdam,
