When planning a visit to Keukenhof, many travelers don’t realize that there are several smaller tulip gardens located nearby.
The Bollenstreek region is compact, and within a short cycling or driving distance from Keukenhof, you can find more intimate gardens that offer a different atmosphere from the large, curated park.

The Tulip Barn is a visitor-focused tulip garden located in the Bollenstreek. It is designed to allow guests to walk between carefully planted rows and experience the flowers up close. It offers a balanced mix of countryside atmosphere and accessible layout.
Why Explore Tulip Gardens Beyond Keukenhof?
While Keukenhof is the most famous spring garden in the Netherlands, smaller tulip gardens often provide:
• Fewer visitors
• Closer interaction with flowers
• A more rural setting
• Flexible access between rows
These gardens are intentionally opened to visitors and are separate from agricultural production fields.
They offer a balance between the structure of Keukenhof and the dramatic openness of working tulip fields.

This photo session was also at The Tulip Barn.
Types of Gardens Near Keukenhof
You will generally find:
Smaller Family-Run Tulip Gardens
These gardens are often managed by local growers and open for a limited number of weeks during peak bloom.
They feel intimate and relaxed, and some allow visitors to walk between rows or even pick tulips.

Tulip Experience Amsterdam is a large-scale tulip garden featuring over 4 million tulips planted across vibrant, walkable fields. Designed specifically for visitors, it allows guests to move between the flowers while respecting the agricultural process.

De Tulperij is a family-run tulip garden and bulb farm that welcomes visitors during the spring season. It combines a working agricultural setting with a beautiful outdoor café surrounded by flowers. Its scale feels intimate and relaxed compared to larger parks.
Show Gardens
Designed specifically for visitors, these spaces prioritize accessibility and visitor experience.
They are ideal if you want to move freely and enjoy color up close.

The Tulip Store Showgarden is the smallest of the nearby tulip gardens, but from my perspective, it showcases some of the most beautiful and carefully selected varieties in the region. The scale feels intimate and personal, allowing you to appreciate individual tulips up close. It is also where I choose my tulip bulbs each year.

This is also De Tulperij, at their show garden.
Accessibility & Location
Most nearby tulip gardens are located within 10–20 minutes of Keukenhof by bike or car. The Bollenstreek is a compact region, which makes it easy to move between locations without long transfers.
Because the distances are short, it is often possible to combine more than one garden in a single morning, depending on bloom timing, weather conditions, and crowd levels. This flexibility allows for variety, all within the same area.
Careful timing is essential, as each garden announces its opening days based on bloom conditions. Planning with this in mind ensures a smooth and rewarding visit.

This is also The Tulip Barn.
Visiting Responsibly
As with all tulip locations, it is important to visit only gardens or fields that officially welcome visitors.
Tulip fields are working agricultural land, and the flowers are grown for bulb production. Stepping into unauthorized fields can damage crops and affect the growers’ work. For this reason, I photograph only in tulip gardens or in fields that publicly announce visitor access.
These gardens are created precisely to allow people to experience the tulips up close while protecting commercial production. Choosing authorized locations ensures that your visit supports the region rather than disrupting it.

Spring in the Netherlands is brief, but when experienced intentionally, it becomes unforgettable.
