Before I arrived in The Netherlands I was totally told birthdays are not as important as in Peru, my birth country. But when I had the opportunity to photograph a kids' dutch birthday party I realized Dutch actually celebrate but different from what I am used to being Latin American.
There are 3 things that the Dutch do differently to Peruvians, as far as I know:
1. Congratulate everyone at the party, friends and family included.
2. Sing with the cake first, as the initial part of the party is cutting the cake and eating it with coffee or tea.
3. No one will bring the cake for your birthday, this is something I am used to in Peru. You provide your own cake :)
I believe people need a little help to organize birthdays, no matter the country you are, more if they are organized at home. In this case, a decorator specialized in small parties in Amsterdam asked me to photograph the result which was beyond beauty. I hope you like the pictures that will be soon on the decorator's website.
Until next time!
Joanna, your Amsterdam photographer
