A Family Photo Session in Amsterdam with Adult Siblings and Their Mother
Not all family photo sessions involve small children. Some of the most meaningful ones happen later in life, when siblings are grown and time together feels even more valuable.
This session was booked to celebrate a birthday, but it quickly became about something bigger: family connection.
The family had already done several photo sessions before, so they arrived relaxed and open. That makes a huge difference. Everyone was comfortable being guided, listening, adjusting, and trusting the process. When that happens, we can focus fully on the photos and the feeling behind them.
This was a fully directed shoot, and that was exactly what the family wanted. Not everyone feels confident knowing how to stand, where to look, or what to do with their hands. Especially with adult siblings and a parent, it’s very normal to want clear guidance. I offered direction throughout the session: how to position themselves, how to connect physically, when to look at the camera, and when to focus on each other. The result is a set of images where everyone looks calm, present, and connected, without feeling stiff.
It was cold that day, but for a few photos, they decided to take off their big jackets. Just for a moment. Just for the picture. That small decision says a lot. When people are willing to step slightly out of their comfort zone, even briefly, the images gain a different kind of clarity. You can see faces, body language, and closeness more clearly. And we always balance that with comfort, taking breaks, and warming up again right after.
Family photos with adult siblings and a mother are often postponed. Life gets busy. People live in different cities. Time together feels short. That’s why sessions like this matter so much. They’re not about perfection. They’re about documenting relationships as they are now. The way people stand close. The way they laugh. The way a mother looks at her children. These photos become records of a chapter that doesn’t come back.
Family love doesn’t stay the same over time. It evolves. Photographing it is a way of acknowledging that, without needing to say too much.
Until next time in Amsterdam,
Joanna
