How Amsterdam Is Meant to Feel | A Documentary Family Session in the City
Most photography sessions begin with a list of photographs people want. This family began with a different request. They wanted to remember how Amsterdam felt. That single request shaped the entire experience.
Instead of moving quickly between locations, we spent the morning exploring the city together. We walked through quiet streets, stopped when something caught their attention, sat beside the canals, and allowed the day to unfold naturally. One of my favourite moments happened when the father paused to photograph his wife and daughter. While he focused on creating his own memories, I photographed the three of them together. My love for documentary photography goes back, and loved that the goal is not to recreate a memory later. The goal is to preserve it while it is happening.
The family had specifically asked for candid photographs, with only gentle guidance when needed. Amsterdam provided the setting, but the real story was how they experienced it together. The day itself almost didn't happen as planned. Strong winds were forecast for the original date, so we moved the session to the following morning. The change gave us calmer weather, quieter canals, and a relaxed atmosphere visible throughout these photographs.
After the session, the family shared:
"She accomplished exactly what we asked for: a series of candid shots that beautifully captured our time in Amsterdam."
For me, that sentence perfectly describes what documentary travel photography should achieve. The photographs become not only of where you visited, but of how you felt while you were there.
See you soon in Amsterdam,
Joanna

Planning a Family Visit to Amsterdam?
One of the advantages of exploring Amsterdam early in the morning is that the city feels completely different.
The canals are quieter, the streets are calmer, and there is more space to slow down and enjoy your surroundings. For families who prefer natural photographs, this often creates a more relaxed experience than visiting the same locations later in the day.
Some of my favourite family sessions are documentary in style. Rather than focusing on a list of poses, we explore the city together and allow moments to happen naturally. A child notices a boat, a parent points out a historic building, someone stops to take a photograph, and those small moments become part of the story.
The result feels less like a photoshoot and more like a memory of your time in Amsterdam.
