This family session brought together parents, grandparents, and a young family of three, all with deep roots connected to the Netherlands.
From the beginning, their vision was very thoughtful. They wanted photos with canals, bicycles, and classic Amsterdam buildings. Details that feel timeless and closely tied to Dutch history. It was important for them to have images all together, but also separate moments. Photos of just the parents, and photos of their small family with their daughter.
Because of their travel schedule, we planned everything for the early morning and finished before 10am. July mornings in Amsterdam are calm and gentle. The light is soft, the streets are quieter, and it gives families space to relax and enjoy the walk without distractions.
This session happened during a special time in the city. In late June and early July, many homes display flags with school backpacks to celebrate graduation. There was a senior in the family, so I explained this tradition while we walked. It added an extra layer of meaning, and we included some of these details in the background of the photos.
The family was a joy to photograph. They were fun, curious, and fully present. The grandmother was a bit serious at first, which is completely natural, but as we moved through the canals and talked, everything eased. By the end of the session, the dynamic felt relaxed and natural.
This is what I love about family sessions in Amsterdam. They are not only about photos, but about shared stories, heritage, and time spent together in a meaningful place.
Enjoy these photos and until next time in Amsterdam,
Joanna
