From Tulip Experience Amsterdam to Keukenhof: Planning a Solo Traveler's Dream Tulip Session
Not every photo session starts with a location. Sometimes it starts with a feeling.
When planning a photo session, I always encourage people to share everything they have in mind, even if it feels ambitious or unfinished. The more I understand what someone hopes to experience, the easier it becomes to create a route that matches their vision.
For this solo traveler's session, we discussed various locations, ideas, and possibilities before settling on a plan to experience two of the most iconic tulip destinations in the Netherlands in a single morning.
Share The Dream
One of the things I enjoy most about planning photo sessions is translating ideas into something practical. Many visitors arrive with photographs they have seen online, a list of places they would like to visit, or simply a feeling they want to remember from their trip. My role is not only to take photographs but also to help determine what is realistically possible within the available time.
For this session, we decided to begin at Tulip Experience Amsterdam before continuing to Keukenhof Gardens. Because the locations are close to each other, we could enjoy two very different experiences without spending most of the morning in transport.
Two Different Tulip Experiences
Tulip Experience Amsterdam offers a more open agricultural landscape, with views of the fields, and bicycles that many people imagine when they think about spring in the Netherlands. Keukenhof offers something completely different. The gardens are carefully designed, with flowering trees, winding paths, and thousands of flowers arranged in beautiful displays.
Combining both locations created a varied collection of photographs while still keeping the morning relaxed.
A Session Designed Around One Person
Although this trip was shared with friends, the photo session itself focused primarily on her. This allowed us to move at a comfortable pace, explore different areas, and create a collection that reflected her experience of visiting The Netherlands during tulip season.
Some photographs focused on the landscape, while others highlighted smaller details and quieter moments throughout the morning.
"Joanna is an excellent photographer and a lovely human! From the beginning, she was organized and professional. She gave me really practical advice for the shoot and had great ideas. She helped me figure out what places were doable in the time we had, and I am forever grateful as I love my photos..."
I often tell clients that their job is to share the dream. My job is to find the locations, timing, and elements that bring it as close to reality as possible. The best sessions are rarely about copying a photograph. They are about understanding what matters most and creating an experience around it.
If you're planning a visit during tulip season and are unsure which locations fit your vision, I'm always happy to help build a route that matches your goals.
Until next time in Amsterdam,
Joanna
