Taking Family Traditions on the Road | A Family Session in Amsterdam

Some families have traditions that become part of their story.  For this family, one of those traditions is taking family photographs every year. They had done it many times at home, but this year was different. Instead of gathering in a familiar location, they decided to continue the tradition while travelling through Amsterdam.

I love it when families bring their traditions with them on their travels. It transforms a photography session from a simple activity into something more meaningful. The photographs become part of an ongoing story rather than a one-time experience. For this session, we explored Jordaan, one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Amsterdam. With its quiet canals, bicycles, historic houses, and smaller streets, it offers a relaxed atmosphere that feels very different from the busiest parts of the city.

The weather changed throughout the afternoon. Fortunately, the family arrived a little earlier than planned, allowing us to start ahead of schedule. We finished just before the rain arrived and were rewarded with beautiful golden light along the canals toward the end of the session. One of the things I enjoyed most was how naturally the family settled into the experience. They already had years of practice being photographed together. There was no pressure to create perfect moments. They simply enjoyed spending time together while exploring a new city.

After the session, they shared:

"Joanna was fantastic. We take family pictures at home every year, but doing so while traveling was a new experience. We were thrilled it was quick and seamless, just like at home. She provided clear instructions, listened to exactly the kinds of images we wanted, and delivered exactly that. Definitely recommend her in Amsterdam!"

That idea stayed with me long after the session. Travel memories naturally fade over time, but traditions help us carry those memories forward. Years from now, these photographs will not only remind this family of Amsterdam. They will remind them that they continued a tradition that matters to them, even while exploring somewhere new.

See you soon in Amsterdam,

Joanna

Should we book a family photography session while traveling?

Many families already have traditions at home. Some take annual family photos, celebrate birthdays in a special way, or create photo books after each trip.

Bringing those traditions into your travels can make a destination feel even more meaningful. Rather than choosing between sightseeing and photography, a session can become part of the experience itself.

For families visiting Amsterdam, I often recommend treating the session as a relaxed walk through the city. The photographs become a record of both the destination and the traditions that matter to your family.

Years later, those photographs can help you revisit not only the places you explored, but also the people you shared them with and the memories you created together.
