How I Secretly Capture Surprise Proposals in Amsterdam

One of the most challenging parts of photographing a surprise proposal isn't taking the photographs. It's becoming part of the background. Before every proposal, I spend time planning with the person proposing. We talk about the exact location, where they will stand, the direction of the light, and the route they'll take to reach the proposal spot. Every detail matters because there is only one chance to capture that first reaction.

For this proposal, the location was beautifully open, right beside the water in Vondelpark. That meant I couldn't simply hide behind a tree or a building. Instead, I had to become someone who naturally belonged there. I arrived early with a bag, a book, and my camera carefully hidden behind me. From a distance, I looked like anyone else enjoying a summer evening in the park.

The person proposing knew exactly where to find me. His partner didn't notice me at all. When the proposal began, I stayed back and let the moment unfold. Rather than rushing towards them, I photographed the first emotions from a respectful distance before quietly moving closer as they celebrated together.

After the surprise came my favourite part of the session. The nerves disappeared, and they simply enjoyed being together. They laughed, danced a little salsa beside the water, and celebrated the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. They arrived in Amsterdam as a couple and left engaged. There is something incredibly special about witnessing that transformation.

I often say that beautiful photographs don't begin with perfect poses. They begin with genuine emotion. If you truly enjoy being together, your connection will always shine through. My job is simply to preserve that feeling so that, years from now, you can look back and remember exactly how it felt to say "yes."
