Why Everything Lives on My Calendar

One of the most important things I have learned as a business owner is that time deserves the same respect as money.

When I put something on my calendar, I treat it as a commitment. That can be a client session, a blog post I planned to write, an administrative day, a museum visit, a coffee with a friend, a consultation, or even a day reserved for rest. Everything lives on my calendar.

Not because I enjoy planning every minute of my life, but because every appointment represents a choice. When I reserve time for something, I am also saying no to everything else that could happen during that time.

As photographers, we often think flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of working for ourselves. And it is. We can choose when we work, when we rest, and how we organize our days. But flexibility is different from availability.

Once I commit to something, I show up.

How I feel that day does not change the commitment. Whether I feel energetic, tired, inspired, or uninspired, I show up. The same applies to the weather. As a photographer, I have worked under sunshine, wind, cold mornings, and light rain. Conditions change, but the commitment remains.

Showing up is a form of respect. Respect for the work I do, respect for the people who are expecting me, and respect for the promises I have already made.

I believe consistency matters more than motivation. Motivation comes and goes. Commitment is what allows a business, a project, or a relationship to move forward over time. Most people understand this naturally when they work for a company. If your shift starts at 9:00, you show up at 9:00. The same principle applies when you work for yourself.

Over the years, I have realized that respecting my own calendar is also how I respect other people's time. When someone books a session, a meeting, or a consultation, that time is reserved. I prepare for it. I organize the rest of my work around it. I decline other opportunities during that period because I have already made a commitment.

That is also one of the reasons I am introducing dedicated consultation hours.

Many photographers and business owners reach out asking questions about Amsterdam, photography, marketing, relocation, or building a business from scratch. I genuinely enjoy those conversations, but they require the same thing as any other professional service: time. And time has value.

By offering dedicated consultation hours, I can give those conversations the attention they deserve while honoring the commitments already on my calendar. Because at the end of the day, a calendar is not just a scheduling tool, it is a reflection of what we consider important.

And I believe both work and rest deserve to be treated with the same level of respect.

Until next time in Amsterdam,

Joanna
