Magical Family Photo Session in Keukenhof Gardens: A Dreamy April Shoot Among the Tulips
One of the most common questions I receive every tulip season is this:
Is early April too soon for Keukenhof?
Will it be too crowded for photos?
This family session on April 2nd answers both questions clearly.
I photographed this sweet family of four during the first days of April. Their vision was simple and beautiful: lifestyle images, real connection, very little posing. Their daughters, aged 2 and 4, brought all the energy and spontaneity we needed. Keukenhof brought the colour.
Making the Most of a Tight Travel Schedule
They landed at Schiphol that same afternoon and arrived at Keukenhof around 2:30 PM. We began their one-hour session at 3:00 PM.
This is important: timing matters more than the month.
Even on a busy day, with sold-out tickets, Keukenhof offers space if you know how to move through the gardens. Understanding crowd flow, tour routes, and light direction makes all the difference.
The late afternoon light was soft and flattering, and we focused on quieter sections of the park. The result looks calm and intimate, even though the gardens were full.
Why Early April Works for Photography
Keukenhof is not only about tulips. It is a curated flower garden designed to ensure continuous bloom throughout the season.
In early April you already find:
- Large tulip beds in bloom
- Hyacinths and daffodils adding layers of colour
- Tree-lined paths with fresh spring greenery
Because of this careful planting strategy, early April is often a wonderful time for photography.
The images from this session show vibrant colour, depth, and open compositions. Crowds disappear when you know where to position your subjects and how to frame the shot.
A Candid, Lifestyle Approach with Young Children
The family wanted natural images that reflected who they are. No stiff posing. No forced smiles. With young children, the key is movement and space. We walked, paused, let the girls explore, and gently guided interactions instead of directing rigid poses.
This approach works especially well in Keukenhof, where the environment already feels magical. Children respond to colour and space. When they feel free, the images feel honest.
What the Family Shared After
“Joanna was incredible. She was punctual, helpful, and so patient with our girls. She knew exactly where to take us and helped pose us when needed. I would absolutely use her again if/when we come back to the area. Our girls loved her and said multiple times after that they wanted to go back and see her again. Thank you, Joanna! We love our photos!!”
For families visiting from abroad, this is what matters most: remembering how the trip felt, not just where they were.
Planning Your Own Keukenhof Photo Session
If you are visiting Keukenhof in Spring 2026, including early April, know this:
- Early April is not too soon.
- Crowds do not automatically mean busy-looking photos.
-With the right route and timing, it is absolutely possible to create calm, timeless images.
If you would like guidance on timing, bloom expectations, or which session length works best, feel free to reach out.

Until next tulip season,
