Last-Minute Surprise Proposal at Keukenhof During Tulip Season

"Extensive and last-minute research!" That's how this couple found me.

Normally, my spring calendar fills months in advance. In fact, I had already closed new bookings on 20 April because tulip season was completely full, but somehow I decided to reopen the agenda for the last week of the season, thinking nobody will book in such a short notice. Their proposal was planned for 4 May. Somehow, everything aligned, and I was able to say yes.

Looking back at these photographs, I'm incredibly glad I did.

One thing I always tell couples is that booking a proposal photographer a few days before your session doesn't mean you'll receive less preparation. It simply means we have less time to go through it together.

As soon as the booking was confirmed, I sent everything they needed: videos explaining the proposal locations, photographs of the exact area, detailed maps, and a complete proposal guide. My goal is always the same: when the moment arrives, you should know exactly where to walk, where to stop, and where to ask one of the most important questions of your life.

For this proposal, the chosen location was Keukenhof. It is one of my favourite places for proposals because, despite how busy it can become, there are beautiful locations that work incredibly well when carefully planned. Of course, reality rarely follows the script perfectly.

When they arrived, the gardens were much busier than expected. Instead of waiting for the perfect empty moment, which often never comes I encouraged him to trust the plan. 

"Forget everyone around you, and just propose" 

Imagine you're standing inside your own little bubble where only the two of you exist. That's exactly what he did, and the surprise was fantastic to witness, she laughed, jumped with excitement, and immediately forgot about everyone walking around them. Those genuine reactions are impossible to recreate, and they're always my favourite photographs from a proposal.

One concern I hear quite often is, "What if there are people behind us?"

It's a fair question. Outdoor proposals are unpredictable. Visitors will walk past, someone might stop to look, and sometimes a crowd appears just when you least expect it. While I can't stop people from walking through a public garden, I can promise something else: every final photograph you receive is carefully edited so that distractions disappear and the focus stays exactly where it belongs, on the two of you.

After the proposal, we spent time wandering through Keukenhof while they enjoyed the first moments of being engaged.

At one point, I suggested trying a location I'd been wanting to photograph all season. They trusted me completely, and together we created one of my favourite images from this year's tulip season.

That's another reason I love these sessions so much. Every proposal is unique, but they all have one thing in common: overwhelming emotion and a deep sense of care for one another. I meet couples just before one of the biggest moments of their lives, and by the end of the session, they're beginning a new chapter together. That's something very special to witness.

Being invited to document that moment is something I'll never take for granted.
