How I Plan Surprise Proposal Photos at Keukenhof

"We were hoping to capture the surprise proposal, some beautiful photographs with the ring, and the beginning of our future together."

One question I always ask before a proposal is surprisingly simple: "What are you both wearing?"

Most people expect me to ask about the location or the timing first, but clothing can be just as important. It helps me anticipate how you'll stand out against the surroundings and choose the best position to photograph the proposal.

For this session, one answer immediately caught my attention. He described his own outfit and then casually mentioned that his partner would be wearing a sweater covered in flowers.

That small detail completely changed my plan.

Knowing what colours to expect helped me choose the perfect place to stay unnoticed while keeping a clear view of the proposal location. It may sound unrelated, but it has everything to do with the background I choose and the feeling I want the final photographs to convey.

If she was going to wear a sweater covered in flowers, then flowers were clearly something she loved. Even though we were already photographing at Keukenhof, I wanted to be intentional about my composition. Rather than simply showing flowers in the background, I wanted them to feel completely surrounded by them, making the gardens part of the story rather than just the location.

At Keukenhof, my hiding place wasn't behind a hedge or a tree. Instead, I positioned myself inside one of the garden shops, looking through the large windows towards the agreed meeting point.

From outside, I simply looked like another visitor browsing the shop. From inside, the view through the window was perfect. I became almost invisible while still being able to follow every step as they approached the proposal location.

The proposal unfolded exactly as planned.

One of my favourite parts of proposal photography is that first reaction. Before anyone notices the camera, before the excitement settles, there's a brief moment where nothing else exists except the two people standing together.

Afterwards, we explored the gardens while they enjoyed the first moments of being engaged. Without the nerves of the proposal, every smile became effortless, every laugh genuine, and every photograph reflected exactly how they felt that day.

The most meaningful photographs rarely come from elaborate poses. They come from real emotions, thoughtful planning, and giving couples the space to simply enjoy one of the biggest moments of their lives.

Here are some of the pictures from that day to remember the beautiful moments that follow this magical engagement proposal at the Keukenhof Gardens.

Until next story,

Joanna
